Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro -  new window  is losing focus after while

Hi,

Just upgraded to 8.1 pro. When new window is opened (any application), after about 5-10 secs focus is lost. And again.... I have to click on window to regain focus. VERY ANNOING WHEN TYPING DOCO

ANY SOLUTION MR MICROSOFT?

1. Lodged problem with MS, but bo reply for 5 days

2. Started reading posts on net - some about mouse behaviour got my attention

3. Downloaded and installed latest drivers for Microsort mouse

4. Unpluged 'old' mouse and plugged in new mouse(the same model

5. Problem solved - no more problems with focus

6. Conclusion - could ba a problem with Windows upgrade - mouse locked?

am having the same exact problem. Something keeps stealing focus from an active window. When it does, the busy animation appears with the cursor. I think mine is caused by something other then the mouse hid type situation though. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

I have the same problem as the original post and the following post.  Window loses focus or refreshes every 5 seconds.  This causes, for example, opened context menus to disappear.  Please provide some answers.

Window loses focus or refreshes every 5 seconds.

That sounds like tooltip timeout.  E.g. hover mouse over poster name, see first a tooltip, then a thumbnail underneath; 5 seconds later the tooltip disappears but the thumbnail stays indefinitely (AFAIK).  I have always wondered if there was a way to increase that timeout but trying to trace it with ProcMon was inconclusive.  Perhaps you have something else hooked into that process?  In that case you might have something that was comparable in two otherwise identical traces.

For this problem, May be we can check Event Viewer if it identify the problem.

In addition, try to make a clean boot or boot into Safe Mode to test whether this problem caused by 3rd problem, service or driver.

This does not appear to be a Microsoft Problem.  If you're using Start Menu 8, updating to the latest version solves this problem.

My wife is also having the exact same problem, occurs in Microsoft Word. She can't type more than a sentence or two before the focus leaves the word window and she loses everything else she is typing. Have upgraded to 8.1, and if anything, the problem got worse instead of better. Cannot figure out what is going on, but the laptop is next to useless at the moment since she is trying to write papers for college.

Sounds like a different problem.  E.g. "laptop" implies Touchpad for mouse so try disabling the Touchpad and see if the symptom changes.  Many laptops have a facility for doing that.  E.g. my TouchSmart has a physical switch above its Touchpad but others have special keyboard shortcuts, etc. which accomplish the same result.  If nothing else you could always use Device Manager to disable the device completely or try to find some other method of toggling it off and on (such as WMIC or Powershell).

Good luck

This appears to be a widespread problem.  My computer is doing the same thing.

I am using a desktop, not laptop - so the touchsmart/touchpad theory does not apply.

any other further thoughts to this issue?

I am having the same issue with my wife's Asus T100 running Windows 8.1.  Started in the last few days with no new software installs other than Windows updates.  Typing into Microsoft Word or a web browser and focus is lost seemingly at random.  It does seem to start behaving after a few minutes

Using an external keyboard and mouse so its not a question of accidentally activating the touch pad.

A clean boot hasn't helped.

Very frustrating as the previous Windows XP laptop worked reliably - replacing it seems like a total waste of money.

I'm having precisely this problem with an Asus T100 as well.  I have not found a solution, but it is related to being plugged in.  When the laptop is running on battery, I don't have a problem.

My issue was to do with the IObit start menu post 8.1 install - it kept running this check.exe which was the reason for stealing the focus.

After removal, all working fine.

Hope this helps,

David
